James “Ralph ” Sawrey, 80, passed away at home in Newport News, VA, on February 6, 2025.
Ralph was born on July 22, 1944 in Smithfield, NC. His parents were James O. Sawrey Jr and Nancy P. (Stevens) Sawrey.
The family moved to Denver, CO when Ralph was a teenager. He graduated from East High School and later enrolled in college for several semesters.
Ralph spent his career at the telephone company. He began as an installer and worked his way up the ladder, becoming an engineering manager before he retired.
He was very proud of achieving his engineering certificate.
After retiring from the phone company, Ralph took classes and became a CNA. He worked, part time, in a nursing home and, later, as part of an agency that provided in-home care for seniors and those with disabilities.
For many years, Ralph was an active participant in a popular 12 step program. He felt a call to service and did a lot of outreach to help others.
Ralph was a talented painter, having picked up the hobby in his 70’s. Many of his paintings are hung on the walls of his home.
Ralph and Jan’s daughter, Carly M. Jones preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; his children Sandy Turbyne and Scott Sawrey; his brother, Bill Sawrey; his sister, Nan Fraley; nine grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of Ralph’s life will be held at the end of March, in Newport News, VA.
