James Roy Tanner, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, died December 18, 2013, in Georgian Manor, Chesapeake, Virginia. Jim was born in Toledo, Ohio, September 6, 1928. The fifth child of the late Francis Marion and Eula Freas Tanner, he was predeceased by his brothers Paul, Harold and Robert, and sisters, Thelma and Jean.
Jim is survived by his wife, Edith Lawson Tanner; children, Michael, Susan, Karen and Steve; grandchildren Jimmie, Jason and Michael Sherwood, Sara Shalvoy, David Krahl and Chris Tanner; three great-grandsons, a great-granddaughter, and two sisters-in-law, Jean Tanner and Florence Tanner.
Jim retired from the United States Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service. He was a member of the Willis V. Fentress Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Shrine Center, Khedive Golf Club, BAE Golf Club, Knights of Mecca, Order of Quetzalcoatl and Royal Order of Jesters. He was also Past Commander of the Khedive Air Wing, co-chair of the Khedive Golf Classic for more than 20 years and Past Master of the Willis V. Fentress Masonic Lodge.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Khedive Transportation Fund of Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320 or the charity of your choice.
