Virginia Beach-James S. Windschitl passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by Patricia, his wife of 61 years. He is survived by three sons, Lee and wife Tina, Phil and wife Brenda, and Matt; and two daughters, Paula Gross and Mary Reden. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jenna Hamilton and husband Brandon, Krista Roth and husband Alex, Erin Rooner and husband Adam, and David Gum and four great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Caiden Hamilton and Fiona and Camille Rooner. James was a proud Navy veteran. After military service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Richmond Professional Institute for the College of William and Mary and had a career as an auditor with the United States General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress. James was a founding member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and also the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach. He was a member of two fraternal organizations; the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. James volunteered his time and services to support the programs and activities of the Arrowhead Recreation League, the Carolanne Farm Swim Club and the Carolanne Farm Civic League which helped enhance the quality of life in the new and fast-growing communities in the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach.
