Jerome Scott Hewlett, known to his friends and family as Jerry, passed away peacefully at his home in the Chic’s Beach area of Virginia Beach on May 10, 2026, at the age of 61.
Jerry was born on August 24, 1964, in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from Newark High School in Newark, Delaware in 1983. On October 10, 2025, he was diagnosed with cancer and faced his illness with courage and strength, surrounded by the love of his family.
On June 24, 2000, Jerry married the love of his life, Cheryl (Cheri) Lorraine Hewlett. Together they built a life centered around family, laughter, and friendship. Jerry was a devoted husband and proud father who cherished every moment spent with those he loved most.
He is survived by his wife, Cheri Hewlett, and their daughter, Grace Lorraine Hewlett (17), with whom he shared a special bond and many adventures together at their home in Virginia Beach. He is also survived by his son Michael Scott Hewlett (40) of Newark, Delaware; his daughter Hailey Lynn Blankenhorn (28) of Wilmington, Delaware; and his beloved granddaughter Hayden Hewlett (11).
Jerry was preceded in death by his brother, Gary Dale Hewlett, with whom he shared not only family ties but also a passion for business.
Jerry spent more than 40 years in the flooring industry. Early in his career, he and his brother Dale founded Hewlett Flooring, building a reputation for hard work and quality craftsmanship. Jerry later branched out to start his own company, JSH Flooring, which he operated until 2015. After closing his business, he continued working as a flooring installer for Cherry Carpet in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Jerry had a deep love for life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, spending time on the beach, playing with the family dog Puka, and relaxing with friends at his favorite watering holes. One of his greatest joys was sharing music and concerts with his daughter Grace. He introduced her to his favorite bands, including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, while Grace introduced him to country and reggae music. Attending concerts together became one of their favorite traditions.
Jerry will be remembered for his easygoing spirit, his love of good music and good company, and his deep devotion to his family. He touched many lives through his friendships, his work, and the memories he created with those who knew him.
