JoAnn Elizabeth Wilkins was peacefully taken home to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ, on October 10, 2023. She was born on August 7, 1932 to Pauline and Ray Hinckle in Hancock, MD. The family relocated to York, PA where JoAnn met the love of her life, Robert “Corky” Wilkins. They married on June 21, 1952. The couple enjoyed dancing, going to the beach, running, and spending time with family and friends. After 38 years of marriage, Corky passed away following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
JoAnn was a teacher’s aide with the Williamsburg – James City County School System and taught all 38 years at Norge Elementary School. Teaching was her joy and she fondly spoke of the many teachers she worked with long after her retirement in 2012. She was able to reconnect with the other retired teachers at their luncheons at Sal’s Restaurant in Williamsburg. The last one held in August 2023.
JoAnn was an avid supporter of W&M Athletics, especially football and basketball. She was a season ticket holder to both teams from 1973 – 2019; faithfully cheering on her Tribe, and scolding the refs when she felt they missed the call.
JoAnn was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Williamsburg beginning in 1968. She participated in many of the church’s outreach programs, including the food pantry, student shoe drive, and clothing drive for the homeless.
JoAnn is survived by her daughters: Lynn Edgerton and husband Dave, of Chesapeake VA; Cindy Hargrave and husband Dennis, of Scottsburg, VA. Two grandsons: Michael Hargrave and wife Tiffney, of Smithfield VA; Kevin Hargrave of Scottsburg, VA. She has two great grandchildren: Anthony Hargrave and Taylor Hargrave.
She leaves behind many cherished friends and family who will remember her with a smile and a kind word.
A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at St. Stephen Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Suncrest Hospice, 208 Golden Oak Ct, Suite 100, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.
