John Arthur Watts III, 85, died peacefully on October 12, 2013. He is survived by his partner Shirley Henrichsen of Williamsburg, VA. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Brennan Russell.
A Norfolk native born August 10, 1928, John Watts attended the University of Mississippi. His career as a businessman included ownership of W. G. Swartz, Inc. department stores, and Black Creek Ranch. He was also a sales representative for various real estate development companies.
John was a handsome man with sparkling blue eyes who loved adventures and telling stories. He adored his dogs, from Mike – the ugliest water dog to set paws on this earth, to Black Dog – the guard dog who welcomed all, to Teddy – who predeceased him by mere weeks.
John is survived by his first wife, Patricia R. Collmus and their children: Patricia W. Doty of Norfolk, VA, mother of Kathryn Doty of Norfolk, VA and Joseph Doty Kathleen of San Diego, CA; Lee W. Green George of Chesapeake, VA, mother of Lauren Russell of Burke, VA; Elizabeth W. Morningstar Warren of Frederick, MD; John A. Watts, IV and Richard M. Watts, both of Norfolk, VA, and great-granddaughter Isabella Doty of Norfolk, VA. He is also survived by his second wife Gale Watts.
He will be remembered by his lifelong friend, Dick Aufenger.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
