John Timothy Corbett Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 70. Born on November 16, 1955, on a military base in Germany, John lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and passions.
John spent his career as an Electronics Engineer, where he applied his skills and knowledge with diligence and integrity. Outside of work, he was a man of many interests. He enjoyed playing pool and had a deep love for the beach, often spending time at the Outer Banks, a place close to his heart. Though he admitted he wasn’t the best at fishing, he cherished the peaceful moments it brought him. John also loved camping and was an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Phillies. He could often be found watching NASCAR races, cheering on his favorite drivers.
John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine Corbett, the mother of his children, Charlene Corbett and his best friend Kenny Shockley. He is survived by his devoted spouse of 28 years, Shirley Gregory, who stood by his side through life’s journey. He leaves behind his cherished children: Michael Helmus III, John Corbett Jr., Amber Corbett, and Thomas Corbett. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Constance Corbett, Connor Corbett, Cameron Corbett, and Nikolette Helmus who brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his brothers Bill and Bob Corbett.
In addition, John is survived by his bonus children, Denver Farmer (Amy), Ronald Farmer, and Crystal Jones (Ben), along with his bonus grandchildren, Jonathan Farmer, Angelina Farmer, Taylor Harris, Mason Jones, and Sebastian Farmer. He will be dearly missed by his best friends, Paul Chandler and John Negle who shared countless memories and adventures with him.
A memorial service to honor John’s life will be held on a later date at Altmeyer Funeral Home – Riverside Chapel, located at 7415 River Rd., Newport News, VA 23607. Family and friends are invited to gather and celebrate the life of a remarkable man who touched the hearts of many.
