John Jerone Cecelic – Virginia Beach
John Jerone Cecelic or “Duke” as he had been known since birth on April 26, 1936, in Euclid, Ohio, died September 22, 2011, in Virginia Beach, Virginia at the age of 75.
Duke proudly served his country with two careers in the Army and the Civil Service. Among his stations were Alaska, Japan, several assignments in Virginia and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was an active member of all the communities in which he lived and had great stories of helping his family and community survive the Great Alaskan Earthquake.
Duke was predeceased by his parents, John and Adalyne Cecelic and his wife of 48 years Edna Kelch Cecelic. You never saw one without the other.
After his retirement Duke did extensive work with the Lions Clubs of both Petersburg and Virginia Beach. He enjoyed working with school age children to provide them with eyeglasses in order to enhance their education.
Duke is survived by his wife Susan Sussman-Cecelic who fell in love with him for his wonderful sense of humor, high ethical standards and sparkling blue eyes. His four sons and their spouses: Jerry and Betty Cecelic, John and Martha Cecelic, Jim and Janie Cecelic, Joe and Amy Cecelic; his stepson and wife Max and April Sussman and seven grandchildren.
Duke was a faithful member of Saint John the Apostle Catholic Church. The funeral service will be held at the church on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 10:00 am. The church is located at 1968 Sandbridge Road. Duke will be interred with Edna at 4:00 pm at the Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434.
