John Joseph Carvil III – Virginia Beach

John Joseph Carvil III, 50, passed away on August 4, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.

John was the son of Anne Carvil and the late Jack Carvil. He was a graduate of Kempsville High School ’78, the Virginia Military Institute ’82 and received his Masters degree from Old Dominion University. He worked for SPAWAR Atlantic at Little Creek.

He is survived by his devoted wife Sue Ellen and his two exceptional sons John Regan and Joe. He also leaves behind his loving mother, Anne Carvil; sisters, Jane Chudoba, her husband Alan and Catherine Murphy, her husband Terry; nephews Alex and Mark Chudoba, Aidan Murphy; nieces Grace Murphy, Emelie and Madeleine Price.

John fought an 11 month long battle with cancer and his family wishes to thank his mother-in-law Bettie Westland for her loving help. We also thank Dr. Michael Lee and Allison West of Virginia Oncology Associates for his medical care.

John and his family had the support of a large network of friends and relatives over the past year and we thank them all.

A celebration of John’s life will be held Monday, August 9 at 1:00pm at Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd, Virginia Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Ascension or the American Cancer Society. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family. John was ever the encouraging the word. The world was a better place with him, but with his departure, his strong legacy lives on with his family. Prayers will be said by us for him and his family.

I was very saddened when I read about Mr Carvil's passing in the VMI Alumni Review this weekend. I was a Rat at VMI and he was my Rat Company XO. He was a person who I looked up to and respected very much. It has been over 28 years since I last saw Mr Carvil, his memory will last one. I wish you the family well.

VMI 1982

John was the calmest Brother Rat in the VMI Class of 1982. He was aptly named "Cool." The man never worried about anything. He left us way too early. We are better for having made his acquaintance and sadder for his family's great loss.

My deepest condolences go to the family of John. It was truly and honor and priviledge to have met John and his family. Needless to say, i was deeply saddend to hear of his passing. George Mack forwarded John's Obit along to me and I was deeply saddened to read about his passing. We worked together at SEABAT years ago. I remember John as one of the good guys. It is a shame for him to leave us at such a young age. Your family will be in my prayers. Jeff

Sue Ellen and family. Our thoughts are with you. Rich and I have many favorite mmories with John. He will be missed by all of us who knew him. He was a compassionate soul with a wonderful passion for life and those around him. He touched the lives of those who knew him. Our wish for you all is comfort during this time of your lose.

It was a always a great pleasure to work with John as a contractor in support of SPAWAR. My prayers are with his family in what is a most difficult time.

I'm sorry for your loss. John was a good man.

I will always remember John as an exceptional co-worker, dear friend, and a truly outstanding person. He was loved by his large network of friends and will be missed by all. Our family is truly saddened, but much better for the opportunity to have had him and his family in our lives.

I met John my first day at VMI. We were Rat co-dykes for first classman that shared a room. They promptly gave him the name "Cool Carvil" and as goes with most VMI nick names, it was apt and it stuck. John was a great friend, a brilliant EE, and a lot of fun to be around. I know Jesus is happy to have him home.

John will always be remembered with fondness as a quiet but strong Brother Rat - thanks for the way you added to our lives.

I worked with John back in the SEABAT days and for a short time with him at SPAWAR. I always enjoyed seeing him-he was a stand up guy and devoted family man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I had not seen John in years but his face and personality are clear in my mind. John was great person and fun loving guy to be around. I pray that his family will be comforted by how many people he touched and what a wonderful person he was.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and I offer my condolences. John was a brother rat and I remember that cheerful smile and playful nature as we all grew together during those years. We all lost a good man.

I am saddened to hear of John's passing and I have good memories of him at VMI. Even thogh it has been over 25 years since I last saw John, he left his mark on me and I'll never forget him.

John's passing moves us all to keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers. I remember him from our days at VMI with an affable smile and a sense of fun. I pray that his family will take some comfort from the thoughts, prayers and condolences of John's VMI brothers and their families. He will be missed greatly by us all.

John will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers. Despite this grevious loss all of us can take solice in knowing what a good and decent man John was.

John Carvil, Jay Roach, John Murray, Bill Lindquist and myself shared Room 452 our Rat year at VMI. We had plenty of good and bad times together but always remained friends and looked out for one another. John will be missed but not forgotten.

Family, I am truly sorry for your loss. May the many memories you hold of John help you through.

John was a friend and colleague, he was a board member and diligent secretary for the Joint Services Data Exchange and he actively supported the annual Joint Navigation Conference. I know that John bravely fought his disease and it must be comforting to those that have been around him to know that this struggle is over now. I pray for John's family at this time, that they are also comforted by the love and support of relatives and friends and from their faith in God, now and in the days to come.

Please accept my deepest condolences and I pray that God will provide you comfort at this time of need. I worked with John in as a JSDE board member…John was a kind person, smart, friendly, good sense of humor and always willing to help when needed. I feel deeply saddened at his passing but know that he is in a better place without any pain and suffering. John will be missed by all that knew him. May he rest in peace with the Lord.

It is difficult for me to think right now about this. We weren't close at school, but all the memories I do have of John were of a good person who was alway smiling.

The man and his life definitely deserve celebration. I was honored to have known him and to call him Brother Rat. He is missed.
