Johnny Owens, a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community servant, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, he was 77 years old. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvah Owens; his mother, Anna Owens; and his brothers, Peppy Owens and Pat Owens.
Johnny worked for Columbia Gas for 35 years and was a prominent real estate entrepreneur in Portsmouth, VA. A devoted member of Taylor Road Baptist Church, he served faithfully as a Deacon, offering guidance and support to his fellow church members.
He is survived by his children, Curt Owens of Portsmouth, VA, and Kendall Shook of Chesapeake, VA; his grandson, Ethan Shook (Jess Shook), and great-grandson, Levi Jaxon Shook of Belvidere, IL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews across Virginia, North Carolina, and Texas.
A lifelong lover of animals, Johnny fostered many stray cats and helped care for animals in the City of Portsmouth.
He was known everywhere he went for his jokester personality, his love of laughter, and the familiar jokes you were sure to hear more than once.
Johnny will be remembered for his dedication to family, faith, community, and the animals he loved.
The family will receive members from the community to celebrate Johnny’s life and Homecoming at Taylor Road Baptist Church, 2509 Taylor Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23321 on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
