Portsmouth, VA – John Michael Piovane Sr, a dedicated Navy Corpsman who honorably served for over 22 years, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2025 in the Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth.
Born on April 8, 1962 in Philadelphia, Pa, he devoted his life to his family and to the service of his country. John is survived by his wife Patty Piovane, sons Andrew Piovane, Christopher Lankenau, granddaughter Gihanna Lankenau, sisters Anne Materna, Rosemarie O’Drain and a large extended family of relatives and dear friends. John is preceded in death by his parents John and Maryanne Piovane, son John Piovane Jr, and daughter Andrea Lankenau.
From the moment he enlisted in the United States Navy, Piovane embodied the values of duty, sacrifice, and compassion. As a Navy Corpsman he provided medical care to those in need, often in the most challenging conditions. His unwavering dedication to his fellow service members led him to work closely with the Marine Corps, where he proudly served during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Beyond his military career, John was known for his kind heart, quick wit, and deep love for sports. He was a devoted family man, and also an avid fan of the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and NASCAR. He rarely missed a game or race. Whether cheering on his favorite teams or debating stats with friends and family, his passion for sports brought joy to those around him.
John enjoyed his many years of Coaching Basketball and Baseball. He dedicated countless hours to mentoring young athletes, instilling in them not only the fundamentals of the game but also the values of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship.
John Michael Piovane will always be remembered as a courageous Navy Corpsman, a loyal Marine Corps “Doc,” a devoted family man, and a passionate sports fan. His selfless service and enduring spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
