John Richard Hanson Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dedicated community servant, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Poquoson, Virginia, on May 10, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on December 27, 1947, in Poquoson, John spent his life serving his community and enjoying the natural beauty of the area he called home.
A proud graduate of the Poquoson High School Class of 1965, John went on to further his education at Thomas Nelson College. His commitment to service was evident in his long and distinguished career as a firefighter at Station 7, where he worked tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Poquoson.
John’s love for the water was a defining aspect of his life. As a devoted waterman, he cherished his time aboard his beloved boat, “Captain Porgy,” named in honor of his grandfather. He found great joy in fishing, hunting, and spending time outdoors. John was an avid reader and found solace and companionship with his cherished dogs, Leeroy, Andy, and Jenny.
John is preceded in death by his father, John Richard Hanson Sr.; mother, Mildred Lee Hanson; daughter, Rhonda Hanson; grandfather, Captain Porgy; and dear friends Jerry Perry, Barkley S., and Sam Ayer. He also joins his loving poodles in eternal rest.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Hanson; his daughters, Rachel Finch (Jeff) and Sunny Freeman; and his grandchildren, Devin Insley (Michael), John Mason Finch (Marissa), and Emily Alejandro (Phil). John was a proud great-grandfather to Holly Freeman, Carter and Cooper Insley, and Arthur Alejandro. He is also survived by his brother, Garland Hanson (Leslie); nephew, William Hanson (Kayleigh); and niece, Caroline Hanson (Scott).
A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Emmaus Baptist Church in Poquoson. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Poquoson Fire Department, honoring John’s lifelong dedication to the safety and well-being of his community.
