Chesapeake ~ It is with profound sadness and deep respect that we announce the passing of John Russell Hitt, a beloved brother, step father, uncle, and friend, who left this world peacefully on May 8, 2026, in the comfort of his home after a long courageous battle with lung cancer. John was born in the charming town of Cummings, Georgia, where he first opened his eyes to the world and began a life marked by love, dedication, and service.
John was the cherished son of John Henry Hitt and Mattie Marie Hitt, who preceded him in death. He was also welcomed into eternal rest by his brother, Scott Hitt of Georgia, and his stepson, Bobby Hitt, from North Carolina. Despite these losses, Johns heart was always full, surrounded around the love of his loving family, devoted step daughter, Mandy Cochran, and step son, Ralph Cochran, both of Georgia; his beloved sister, Donna Hitt Longfellow, and her husband Jay, of Powder Springs, Georgia; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were touched by his kindness.
A man of integrity and honor, John dedicated much of his life to serving his country and community. He proudly served in the United States Navy, where he devoted 22 years of his life, retiring with distinction. His commitment to public service continued as he worked for the Virginia Department of Corrections for another 16 years before retiring in 2016. John’s career was a testament to his unwavering commitment to duty and his steadfast love for his country.
Outside of his professional life, John found joy in the simple pleasures that life offered him. He cherished moments spent on his front porch, engaging in heartfelt conversations with neighbors, sharing stories, and offering wisdom. An avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, John rarely missed a televised game, cheering on his favorite team enthusiastically.
John’s warmth and unwavering spirit were the cornerstones of his character. He was a man deeply loved by his family and friends, and his absence leaves a void that will be felt by all who knew him. His legacy is one of love, and resilience, and he will be remembered for his gentle nature and the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him.
Services will be private and will be held to honor John’s memory. His family celebrates his life, and they are comforted by the knowledge that John will remain forever in their hearts, his spirit living in the cherished memories they hold dearly.
The family kindly requests that donations be made in John’s memory to a charity of your choice, honoring his spirit and enduring legacy.
