Joseph Jeremiah Schopen- 88, living in Poquoson, Virginia- passed away peacefully on March 21st, 2021. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Joe was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Joe was a veteran who served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
Joe received his insurance license on his 21st birthday and stayed in the financial industry for 52 years. He created his own business as JJ Schopen and Associates and, under new ownership, it still thrives to this day. In 1982 he became one of the first Certified Financial Planners. He loved his work and would always say, “If you love what you do than you never work a day in your life!” Joe’s natural aptitude for leadership helped dozens of associates to strengthen their careers.
Joe joined Rotary International when he moved to Maui, Hawaii, and remained a member for 27 years; serving as President in the Upcountry Club for one year. He was a member of the Lahaina Art Society. After his retirement, he pursued his love of art as an oil painter. He raised his family in the church and experienced the “Walk to Emmaus.” His smile was infectious and his love for the Lord a passion.
Joe was preceded in death by former spouse, Patricia, and is survived by his wife, Claire, and his nine children and spouses: Joseph Jr. (Janet), Robin (Carl), Linda, Mark, Gretchen (Michael), Gayle (Chris), Lisa (Robert), Heidi (Mike), Hans (Kirsten); along with 23 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
There will be a celebration of life memorial at All Generations Adoration Chapel, 28 Harpersville Rd. Newport News, VA 23601 on Friday May 14, 2021 – 3 P.M.
