Joseph M. Mathias Jr., 88, of Windsor, passed away Oct 11, 2011. A native of Norfolk, he is survived by his wife, Linda; half-sister, Susan Merritt of West Palm Beach, FL; niece, JoAnn Brausewetter, of Norfolk; and a host of friends. Having earned his pilot certificate before high school graduation, Joe held a passion for aviation throughout his life. As a WWII glider pilot, he crossed the Rhine into Germany. He retired from his beloved Piedmont Airlines in 1976 and spent the rest of his days restoring and flying light airplanes. Joe was a founding member of the Tidewater Soaring Society and the Tidewater Soaring Foundation and belonged to the Experimental Aircraft Association, Quiet Birdmen , and Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society. In 2005, he was inducted into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame.
A memorial service will be held at 3PM Sunday, Nov 6 at the Windsor Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Tidewater Soaring Foundation, 2361 Rookery Way, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. Online condolences may be expressed at www.cremate.org.

Dear Linda, I know you had wonderful times with Uncle Joe. I also have great memories with he and dad hanging out at the airport in my high school days and later. Uncle Joe taking me in a glider and doing a loop! Taking my first lessons in the Cub, flying the antique airplanes he built , having lunch every week with all the men. Following dad and Uncle Joe like a puppy and loving every minute of being a part of their airport fun. Going the EAA fly - ins ; such fond memories! I love you Uncle Joe- dad does too!!!
