Joyce Elizabeth Carter Washington, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025, in her hometown of Gloucester, Virginia. Born on January 10, 1944, Joyce lived a full and vibrant life, reaching the age of 81 years.
Joyce dedicated her career to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), offering compassion and kindness to all those she served. In addition to her professional work, she was known for her warm presence as an usher at Smithfield Baptist Church, where she welcomed worshippers for many years. A woman of varied interests, Joyce found joy in playing cards and visiting the casino, always ready for a game and a good time. She had a passion for travel, exploring new places and creating cherished memories with her loved ones. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she relished spending quality time with them, especially during the holidays, when her love for cooking brought everyone together. A devoted reader, she often spent her quiet moments immersed in books.
Joyce was preceded in death by her father, Willie R. Carter, her mother, Laura M. Banks, her brother, Willie Carter, and her sister, Shirley Carter. Her legacy lives on through her children: Oletha, Linda, Paula, Paul, Franklin, Leroy, and Jerry; her siblings: Lee Roy Carter and Barry Allen; her grandchildren: Takema, Fanntay, Latrice, Sasha, Brittany, Jerry, P.J, Licia, and Taletha; and her great-grandchildren: Jamayah, Jailah, Joleah, Donté, Octivia, Xavier, Abraham, Eliana, Emori, and Avonté. Joyce was also blessed with a great-great-granddaughter, La’Niyah Torres, who brought her immense joy.
A memorial service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at The Church of Abraham, located at 4810 Hickory Fork Rd, Gloucester, VA 23061, on March 15th, 2025, at 12:00 pm.
Joyce Elizabeth Washington will be remembered for her unwavering love, generous spirit, and enduring dedication to her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
