Virginia Beach- Mrs. Juanita B. Wasson passed away peacefully at home and in the presence of family on December 13, 2017. She was 83.
Juanita was the sole child of Robert J. and Mae V. Licklider. She was born on July 27, 1934 near Front Royal, Virginia.
Juanita graduated from Martinsburg High School in West Virginia in 1952. She accepted a secretarial position with a local company.
Juanita married Ronald V. Wasson on April 20, 1957. They moved to Virginia Beach in 1963. During the first summers nearly every relative and quite a few former neighbors came to Juanita’s and Ron’s house to vacation in Virginia Beach. One couple – with their five children in tow – found the house at 2am one morning. Fortunately some very kind neighbors on Hornell Lane in Thalia overlooked the traffic and possible violation of the city’s hotel ordinances.
In 1978, Juanita and Ron left Virginia Beach when Sherwin Williams transferred Ron to a new position in Atlanta, Georgia. Subsequently, they moved to Syracuse, New York, where they experienced a total of 140 inches of snow the first winter, Springfield, Massachusetts, and Houston, Texas.
Juanita and Ron returned to Virginia Beach when Ron retired from Sherwin Williams in 1995. They became active members of the historic Tabernacle Methodist Church on Sandbridge Road. Juanita volunteered often. For example, Juanita sang in the choir, served as a “card angel” by sending church get well cards to those members who were ill, served as a prayer chain captain, volunteered to work at Lotus Lunches and Colonial Dinners and oversaw the ordering of flowers for the Church. Juanita very much appreciated the fellowship of her fellow church members.
Juanita is survived by Ron, her devoted husband for 60 years, Kathy, her daughter, Robert, her son, and his wife, Karen, Paul and Kristina, her grandchildren, Kristina’s husband, Mark, and Abby, Juanita’s great granddaughter who has red hair and a vibrant personality to match.
Those who knew Juanita know what a great sense of humor she had and how well she could dish out the funny personal comments as well as be the subject of them. As a result, Juanita was particularly close to her grandson Paul, whom she ribbed and was kidded by regularly almost right up to her passing.
A memorial service at the Tabernacle United Methodist Church has tentatively scheduled for the morning of January 27, 2018. Details will be released by the Church and the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the church.
Juanita very much appreciated and the family thanks Caroline, Maryanne and her other caregivers during her final days and the thoughts and prayers extended by so many friends upon her passing.
