Julie Marie Gehl, a remarkable woman whose life was filled with love, music, and education, passed away on April 7, 2026, in Chesapeake, VA, at the age of 61. Born on July 19, 1964, in Corning, NY, Julie’s journey through life was marked by her passion for learning, teaching, playing music, singing and inspiring others.
As a dedicated educator, Julie made a lasting impact as an English teacher at Tidewater Community College. Her commitment to nurturing minds and encouraging students to reach their full potential was evident in every lesson she taught. Julie’s love for literature and psychology was rooted in her studies at William and Mary and further enriched by her time at Old Dominion University.
Beyond the classroom, Julie found joy in music. A talented musician, she played multiple instruments, but her heart always returned to the piano, her favorite. She shared her vibrant spirit as a singer in the band, Mama J and the Open Bar Band, bringing joy to all who listened.
Julie’s life was an adventure, shared with her beloved husband of 40 years, David Gehl. Together, they created cherished memories during their travels to places like New Orleans, the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Savannah, GA, and various wineries. Their love story was one of exploration, love of music, laughter, and deep companionship.
Preceded in death by her mother, Shirley Nellis, and sisters, Karen Tomkins and Sherrill Ann DeSandro. She is cherished in memory by her devoted husband, David Gehl; her father, Thomas Nellis; and her sister, Amy Montgomery, who will all carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Julie also held a special place in her heart for her feline companions: Atticus, Boo Radley, Bugatti, Madison Scout, Freesia, and Mallory.
A Celebration of Life honoring Julie will take place at 2 pm on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Family Choice Funerals and Cremations, 5401 Indian River Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A reception will follow, offering friends and family an opportunity to share stories and celebrate the beautiful life Julie lived.
