It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Julie McVicar Compton, an inspiring soul who left this world on March 12, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Michigan on April 16, 1938, Julie lived a life full of passion and dedication, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Julie spent her professional years as a respected Enrolled Agent and Tax Professional, working with Jackson Hewitt and Langley FCU. Her career was marked by a commitment to helping others navigate the complexities of tax systems, always with a warm smile and expert guidance. When she wasn’t dedicating her time to her profession, Julie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a profound love for the beach and could often be found lighthouse gazing with awe and wonder. An avid reader, she cherished every moment with a good book. Julie’s adventurous spirit led her to travel far and wide, always eager to learn something new.
Music was a significant part of Julie’s life; she sang in the church choir for over 50 years and enjoyed playing bridge and handbells. Her love for water was evident as she taught swim lessons and participated in water aerobics. Julie lived by the mantra “dessert first because life is too short,” a philosophy that encouraged her and those around her to savor life’s sweetest moments. Julie began her academic journey at Lynchburg College, where she met her first husband, E. Conrad Compton, with whom she shared 57 beautiful years. She later graduated from Christopher Newport College with a Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, a testament to her lifelong commitment to learning. A dedicated member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hampton, Julie also cherished her connections with the Lunch Bunch at The Chesapeake, where she formed lasting friendships.
Julie is preceded in death by her mother, Nada Lewis; her father, Charles McVicar; and her first loving husband, E. Conrad Compton. Julie remarried in 2018 and leaves behind her second loving husband, Richard Haight; daughters Cheryl Franzyshen and Cindy Bloxom; sons-in-law Steve Franzyshen and Scott Bloxom; grandchildren Christina Franzyshen, Grace Bloxom, Hope Lechthaler, and Stephen Franzyshen; grandsons-in-law Dan Agostino and Zach Lechthaler; and many beloved extended family members.
