Karen A. Griffin, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 68. Born on July 15, 1957, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Karen lived a life full of creativity, love, and joy.
A talented graphic designer by profession, Karen brought her artistic vision to everything she touched. Her passion for art was not only evident in her work but also in her hobbies, which included cultivating beautiful gardens filled with vibrant flowers and capturing the beauty of nature through bird watching. Her culinary skills were admired by all who had the pleasure of enjoying her meals, and she cherished every moment spent cooking for her family.
Family was the cornerstone of Karen’s life. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, David W. Griffin, and her parents, Fred B. Valdes Jr. and Linnie Valdes. She is survived by her devoted children, Lisa McDavid and Jason Griffin, who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Stephanie Griffith, Courtney Griffith, Amanda McDavid, Joshua McDavid, Christopher Griffin, David Griffin, Skyla Griffin, and Quinn Griffin—and her great-granddaughters, Olivia McDavid and Kendal Evans.
Karen is also survived by her siblings, Fred Valdes III, Sam Valdes, Christopher Valdes “Chico,” and Lisa Slezak; and many nieces and nephews, who will miss her dearly.
Though no formal services will be held, Karen’s family invites those who knew her to remember her in their own personal ways, celebrating the remarkable life she led and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her.
Karen’s warmth, creativity, and unwavering dedication to her family will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
