I met Kneeland in Fall of 1983, when I began teaching his biology lab classes to non-science majors. I even ended up illustrating his student lab manual. This was during my tenure there as a Ph.D. candidate in marine ecology. He was a great mentor and friend: knowing him and teaching for him was a singular and great academic experience for me. Kneeland always had a wry sense of humor. He was also an amazing teacher: it takes a great deal of dedication teaching Biology to students who really do not want to learn any science. He always said, even students in the business department, needed to understand how science works and to develop an understanding of the complexity of life. I remember a conversation with one dubious student from Chicago, who had an interest in one day trading futures on the Board of Trade, or something similar. Being from farm country and a botanist, Kneeland immediately asked the student how he planned to be successful if he did not understand weather and biology! I have often wondered what became of that student... I am very sad to hear of his passing. He has left this world a better place having educated so many students in Biology. Dirk Peterson, PhD, MD
