Williamsburg – La-Rue Hite, 87, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025. He was
born to John Porter Hite and Omalee Whisenant Hite on September 16, 1937, in
Calhoun County, Alabama. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his
brothers, James Verlon Hite, John (Jay) Hite, and Billy Hite.
The Hite family moved from Alabama to Williamsburg, VA in 1949. A gifted athlete in his
youth, La-Rue enjoyed boxing, football, baseball, and softball. He was an avid
outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, gardening, and building. He especially enjoyed
his boat, Ford trucks, bluegrass and gospel music, and his beagles. He retired from
Camp Peary in Williamsburg after 27 years in 1993. La-Rue was a friend and mentor to
many and deeply loved his large extended family.
Left to cherish his wonderful memory is his beloved wife of almost 67 years, Mildred
Richardson Hite; his two daughters, Terry La-Rue Hite, and Tracy Hite Garcia (Robert).
He is also survived by his two sisters, Judy Garland Hite Johnson, and Patricia Hite
Hogge (Bobby). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and
neighbors. Additionally, he leaves behind his dear friends, Peter Panayotis, and Gary
Martin. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Glenn Ross, La-Rue’s
wonderful primary care physician who provided many years of expert care as well as
Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center nurses and physicians.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty
Baptist Church, 15810 Liberty Church Road, Lanexa, VA 23089. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to York County Fire Department, 2000 Newman
Road, Williamsburg, VA 23188. The Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the
