Larry Raymond Ober, born in Indiana, Pennsylvania on April 17, 1939, passed away April 25, 2025 from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and multiple myeloma (MM). He faced his illness with the same courage and determination he showed throughout his life.
Larry grew-up on a farm in Marion Center, Pennsylvania, where he developed a passion for nature, including an extreme love for ducks. He fed a flock of ducks at his home until he was not strong enough to go outside, but insisted his family continue to feed them while he called “here duckie”. Larry had a green thumb that was passed down to his sons and many grandchildren.
Larry graduated from Marion Center Joint High School (1957) and after high school he moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the FBI. He attended Dubois Business School (1960). He joined the United States Air Force and while proudly serving for 22 years he served as the ROTC director at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was also stationed in Texas, Hawaii, and Florida before retiring in Virginia. Larry was not one to sit idly and after his “retirement”, he would go on to work and retire from Bank of America (20 years) and Riverside Health Systems (19 years).
Larry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sandra Ober (nee Benamati); two sons, Lauren (Ellen) of Gloucester, VA and Kory (Susan) of Knoxville, TN, 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his older sister Verla, nephew Robert, and niece Christi, and his cousins Phoebe and Laird.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Eleanor Ober, two sons, Shanon (January 2025) and Chad (October 2020), as well as, two grandsons, Joshua and Ean.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Larry’s name to Hospice House of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Pkwy, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Riverside Cancer Center (especially Patti Joy) as well as Williamsburg Hospice House for their professional and compassionate care of Larry while under their supervision.
The family will be receiving friends at the Ober residence on May 9, 2025 from 3:00 to 5:00.
