Laura Danette Edwards was born on June 5, 1957 at the San Diego Naval Base Hospital and passed away peacefully at her home in Hampton, VA on October 2, 2023. She is predeceased by her parents, William S. Edwards and Mary Jannet Edwards.
Laura spent her childhood and adult life in Hampton, VA. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Spanish from Christopher Newport College. She then attended and taught at the University of Virginia for a short time until her illness intervened.
Laura studied under Nicholas Lodge, who was a co-owner of International Sugar Art Collection in Atlanta, GA; and was the artist who made the cake for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. She continued her studies under Nicholas Lodge, where she learned to create floral decorations for her cakes. These flowers are nearly indistinguishable from their living models, but were created with sugar. Laura operated Cakes of Distinction for many years, making special occasion cakes in flavors of her own creation like Peach Bellini and Hummingbird Cake to name a few.
Additionally, Laura was an international expert in the field of artist dolls. She was a member of NIADA and editor for the NIADA monthly newsletters.
Laura is survived by her baby brother, W. Lewis Edwards; and numerous well-loved cousins and friends. Laura will be dearly missed. Per Laura’s request, no services will be held.
