Lois Helen Bateman 

Chesapeake – Lois “Helen” Bateman, 78, passed away November 25, 2016 after a lengthy illness. She left this earthly life to walk without pain with our Lord. Helen believed in the power of Christian prayer.

Born November 5, 1938 in Wise County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Maude Moore. Helen is survived by her husband of 59 years, Wallace Emmitt Bateman.

Helen was the consummate mother and homemaker. An expert cook, she enjoyed cooking for friends and family. She amassed a large library of recipes and cookbooks. Many remember her cheerful presence working at Farm Fresh as a food demonstrator. Like her mother and father, she was an accomplished gardener and canner. No distance was too great to gather ingredients for her recipes!

Helen loved flowers and plants. She could name and explain botanicals as well as any botanist-and she was just as precise at spelling them, too. She had a vast knowledge of flower arranging and crafting beautiful wreaths.

Accompanying her love of all things outdoors, were her travels. She enjoyed touring America, cruising the oceans, and international travel. She loved hiking and camping.

In addition to her husband, survivors include sons Wallace M. Bateman (Janie) and David W. Bateman; grandchildren Jessy, Justin, Chelsea, and Lindsey; great-grandchildren Jayden, Skyler, and Zachary; and sisters Joyce (Norman) Payne and Jean (Dennis) Tate.

Visitation will be held at 12:00pm, Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23462. A memorial service celebrating Helen’s life will be held following visitation at 1:15pm with Chaplain David Girardin officiating.

Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family with all arrangements.
