Lyman Sidney Barnes, Jr.
Virginia Beach – L. Sidney Barnes, Jr., 71, died in his residence May 5 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Born in 1940 in Norfolk he was a 1959 graduate of Norview High School. His alma maters include Chowan College, Virginia Tech and ODU. He was past Dir. of the VB Jaycees, member of the Soc. of Chemical Engineers and Soc. of Safety Engineers and numerous other affiliations. He was predeceased by his parents; Lyman Barnes, Sr. and Lucy Flynn and step father William Flynn. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Cheryl deSteuben Barnes, daughters Collette Freeland Dan, Amy Acland, son Lyman “Skip” Barnes III Cheryl, grandchildren Mia Salch and Mitchell Freeland, step mother Elizabeth Barnes, brothers Bill Flynn, Ron Flynn Carol, Douglas Barnes, step sister Gay Flynn, mother-in-law Mabel deSteuben and extended family. Memorial Services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church, 5350 Providence Rd., Va. Beach on Sat., May 12 at 2:00 with fellowship immediately following. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. of VA or the Rev. Paul Kettner Fund of Hope Lutheran Church. The family extends love and gratitude to Malika Johnson who lovingly cared for Sidney during the last year and special thanks to the Hospice caregivers for their devotion and support. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
