Maggie Annelle Viniard Choate passed away in her home on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 surrounded by her loving family and friends in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Maggie was born April 16, 1999 to Sam and Kim Viniard at Landstuhl Army Regional Medical Center in Germany where her parents were serving in the US Air Force. From Germany she moved onto Shreveport, Louisiana and later Williamsburg, Virginia where she called home.
Maggie was a fierce competitor and teammate. She played basketball, tennis, cheered, swam and fell in love with volleyball. Maggie played volleyball with the Williamsburg Volleyball Club competing on a national level from the age of 12. As a four-year varsity volleyball player at Jamestown High School, she led the Jamestown Eagles to 4x Conference Championships, 3x Regional Championships and 3x Group 4A state runner-up finish in 2016. Her honors include 2nd-team All-Conference 2014, 1st-team All-Conference 2015, 1st-team All-Conference and 2nd-team All-Region 2016. Additionally, in her senior year she was a finalist (one of only 80 across the nation) for the Andi Collins Setter award by Prep Volleyball, which recognizes the best high school setters in the country. Maggie loved jazz music and was a classical bass player participating in orchestra and jazz band, graduating with Music Honors.
Maggie chose to attend Marymount University where she was able to study nursing and play collegiate volleyball. Maggie continued to bring in accolades during her college volleyball experience. Her career honors include: AVCA All-America Honorable Mention (2018), AVCA AllEast Region team (2018), VaSID First-Team All-State (2018), VaSID Second-Team All-State (2019), All-Atlantic East First Team (2018), All-Atlantic East First Team (2019), Atlantic East Specialty Player of the Year (2019), Atlantic East All-Academic team (2019), Marymount Invitational MVP (2018), Atlantic East Offensive Player of the Week (09/8/2018 & 10/1/18) , CAC Player of the Week (10/30/17), ECAC Rookie of the Week (10/31/17), and Marymount Female Rookie of the Year (2018). She also received the Academic Excellence BA in Nursing Award. After graduation, Maggie took a position as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Nurse at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Norfolk, VA where she flourished professionally with her critical thinking and quick assessing skills that earned her promotion to “Charge Nurse”. While “slaying” the day in the NICU she was able to bond and create endearing friendships with her fellow NICU nurses with whom she shared her love of reading and connected during book club outside the healthcare setting.
While attending Marymount University, Maggie met the love of her life, Connor Choate. They met while playing volleyball for the school and shared many adventures together since. Connor’s love for Maggie knows no end as he became scuba certified and learned to ski to experience and enjoy Maggie’s passions of life with her. Maggie and Connor married on January 14, 2023 in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos in an unforgettable beach wedding. They honeymooned to Salt Cay, Turks and Caicos and spent the week swimming with humpback whales, scuba diving, and riding bikes around the island. In July 2024 the young couple welcomed the Maine Coon kitten Buffy to their hearts and home. Maggie and Connor purchased a home in Virginia Beach in October 2024.
Maggie had a mischievous sense of humor and her brilliant smile and infectious laugh lit up any room. She was very protective of her siblings and loved her family and friends deeply. If Maggie wasn’t taking care of babies she was reading, sewing quilts, scuba diving, skiing, shopping, swimming with whales and sharks, travelling, watching a Harry Potter marathon, or playing with her beloved cat Buffy. Maggie loved CrossFit; she started at Marmon Muscle in Williamsburg in high school and continued at Crossfit 757 then Chic’s Beach Crossfit in Virginia Beach. She started doing triathlons in 2023 and completed her first Sprint Triathlon in Jamestown on July 23, 2023 and placed 3rd in her age group; since then she has competed in two other triathlons.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Connor; her parents Kim and Sam, brother Stephen, sister Sammi, niece Vyla, as well as grandparents, uncles, a host of cousins, great uncles, great aunts and loving friends.
