Marion Elizabeth Baston Emmett

Marion “Bette” Emmett, (92), was called home to be with the Lord on August 23, 2024. Bette was born March 30, 1932, in Farmington, NH. She was the youngest of four children of Elfreda Mildred Baston Otis & Burton William Baston. Bette is survived by her son Ross Emmett (and Kim Birchall), daughter Donna Emmett Hildebrand (Jon); grandchildren Lydia Emmett (Erik Priebe), David Emmett (Jess Zimmering), Thomas Emmett (Kristine), Jonathan Hildebrand (Ariana Snowden), Luke Hildebrand (Flan Park & Emerson Perper), Brent Hildebrand (Elissa Harvey); great grandchildren Sebastian, Anneliese, Ethan, Isaac, Emily, & Ben.
Bette graduated from Keene Teachers College in 1954 – now part of the University of New Hampshire. She received continuing education in journalism and English from Old Dominion University, Norfolk State, and University of Virginia extension in Norfolk. Bette taught fifteen years in New Jersey and Norfolk, VA at Norfolk Christian High, Brubaker Academy, and Ryan Academy in journalism and English. Bette was a correspondent for the Virginian Pilot. She wrote and read stories for Story Hour at Tabernacle Church of Norfolk, a guide in Pioneer Girls, and home schooled a grandson for nine years. She enjoyed reading and writing. In her 80’s, she read over 1,000 books in one year. She was a 43-year survivor of breast cancer.
A celebration of her homegoing will be September 21, 2024 at CenterPoint Community Church, 253 Saint Luke’s Church Road, Chesapeake VA 23320 at 2:00 pm. The service will be live streamed on the church’s Facebook page and YouTube channel for those that cannot attend in person.
A private burial will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington, NH at a later date. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Young Life of Chesapeake or to The Gideons International for Bibles.
