Marjorie Irene Kelly, née Campbell, passed away peacefully on December 29th, 2024.
Marjorie, or “Margie” as her family called her, was born July 5th, 1930, to Callie Belle Hunnings Davenport and William Hyman Campbell in Tarboro, NC. Margie moved multiple times throughout the Depression before her mother made a permanent home with her stepfather James “Jim” Davenport in Norfolk, VA. Margie graduated from Maury High School in 1948.
Raising 7 children with her husband Peter Kelly, Margie and Pete moved their growing family to the Pembroke Manor area of Virginia Beach in the 1960s and remained there together for the following two decades. Margie was reintroduced to her childhood sweetheart, Bud Barnette, at her Maury High School 40th Class reunion; they were inseparable until his passing in 2009. Margie worked as an accountant until her retirement in the mid-1990s.
Once retired, the home on Pembroke Lake was her focus until her move to assisted living in 2020. It was the center of four generations of the Kelly and Barnette families, where siblings and cousins would spend hot summer days in the pool, and friends and family would spread throughout the downstairs with full plates on holidays. You were always welcome to any Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas – and dinner was always at 2 pm.
She was made resilient by the Depression, and her most quoted saying was that any trouble was simply “water under the bridge.” That we could all share in her serenity in the face of difficulties.
Margie was predeceased by her brother William Thomas “Tommy” Campbell, her son Patrick Kelly, her grandson Sean Kelly, her late-life partner James “Bud” Barnette, and Bud’s son Kevin Barnette.
Margie is survived by six children, Michael Kelly (Gayle), Rosemary Holmes (Tom), Kevin Kelly (Shell), Laura Kelly, Eileen Carlson (Mark), Clare Kaeding (Todd); 13 grandchildren and their spouses, and 22 great-grandchildren; Bud’s children and spouses, Susan Barnette Burns, Jerry Barnette, Mark Barnette (Laurie), and Samantha Barnette; his four grandchildren and their spouses and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Ms. Clara, Keneisha, and Jeida from All About Family Residential Care of Virginia Beach for their loving assistance in keeping Margie comfortable in her final years.
Interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Park on January 29, 2025, in a private ceremony.
