VIRGINIA BEACH – Mary Ann Jackson, a resident of Westminster Canterbury, died November 16, 2015. She was born in Charleston, WV on April 28, 1935 the daughter of the late John Edward Marston and Mary Park Nease. She graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology in Montgomery and was elected to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She began her forty year career in science and special education teaching biology at Norview High School in Norfolk, where she met, and married there LTJG Morse Robert Jackson USN of Philadelphia, on May 2, 1959 at Willowwood Presbyterian Church.
Mary Ann is survived by Bob Jackson, her husband of 56 years. She travelled with him during his career as a naval officer and as a Presbyterian minister to Maryland, Virginia, California, Puerto Rico, and Maine. For ten years she headed the science department of Fairfax County Secondary School for the Emotionally Disturbed, and her final teaching positions were in Halifax, VA where she remained an honorary member of the Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club.
Mary Ann was a member of Calvin Presbyterian Church in Norfolk where she served as an elder and session member, and chaired the congregational care team for three years. At Westminster Canterbury Mary Ann was active in the Flotsam and Jetsam organization, served as a floor representative and on the religion committee, and had a particular interest in visiting memory-impaired residents of the Chesapeake wing. Twice during retirement Mary Ann served on a Virginia State Commission in support of the disadvantaged.
She is also survived by daughter Lynn Caroline Jackson Quinn and husband Tom of New Canaan, CT, son Glen Robert Jackson and wife Elisabeth of Chesapeake, two grandsons Patrick and Jackson Quinn, and other extended family. Mary Ann was predeceased by her brother John Park Marston, formerly of Marietta, GA.
Mary Ann is remembered for her smile, her energy, and her love of life and others. She never met a stranger. A memorial service will be held 1 pm on Saturday, November 28, 2015 by the Rev. Jenny Spivey at Westminster Canterbury’s Holy Trinity Chapel. A reception will follow. Memorials welcomed to the American Kidney Fund, the Deacon’s Fund of Calvin Presbyterian Church, and the Fellowship Fund of Westminster Canterbury.
