Mary Ann Jenkins Matthews, 75, of Hampton, VA, passed in her sleep on February 22, 2024 at home where she resided with Neal, her first born son, and Ginger for the past five years. Neal and Ginger provided Mary Ann with much company and care. Relieved of all that ailed her, she rests in peace.
Mary Ann was renowned for her delicious southern cooking, especially her banana pudding and made from scratch dumplings. In her children’s youth, she was a fierce advocate when they needed one. She had a special touch with growing plants and a steady hand at painting ceramics. At one time, Mary Ann was a feisty, hellacious softball player in a local women’s league. She didn’t like when people underestimated her, and judgmental people easily provoked her ire, though, oftentimes, she held her own counsel. Mary Ann was also an avid reader, and she whipped quickly through all types of word puzzles. An introvert at heart, she was also content with her own company.
She was preceded in death by her husband Larry Matthews; her brothers, Alan Keith Jenkins and Raymond Jenkins; and her parents, Mary Frances (McDonald) Jenkins and Laban Louis Jenkins. Remaining family who cherish memories of her include her daughter, Barbara and her husband, Keith; two sons, Neal and Rob (and his wife, Raina); three grandchildren, Ryan, Kent, and Taylor; her sister, Jacqueline and her husband, Mike, and nephews, Christopher and Alex. Per her wishes, no services will be held.
