With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Michael Wayne Custer, a beloved son of Newport News, Virginia, who departed this earthly life on April 18, 2026, at the age of 60. Born on June 11, 1965, in the same city he cherished throughout his life, Michael’s journey was filled with service, dedication, and compassion.
Michael proudly served his country in the United States Army for 11 years, during which time he received multiple service medals in recognition of his commitment and bravery. His military career was marked by a steadfast devotion to duty and a deep sense of honor.
Following his distinguished service, Michael transitioned to a career as a Certified Medical Assistant. In this role, he brought his nurturing spirit and professionalism to Riverside, touching countless lives with his gentle care and unwavering support. His coworkers at Riverside were not just colleagues but friends who became family, and they will dearly miss his warm presence and kind heart.
Michael’s legacy of service and kindness continues beyond his lifetime through a Treasured Memories Fund established in his honor. This fund will keep his compassionate spirit alive, supporting causes close to his heart and allowing those who knew him to contribute to his enduring legacy.
He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton Cemetery at a later date, where friends and all whose lives he touched are invited to celebrate the remarkable life of a man who gave so much to others.
