On Tuesday, September 24, 2024, Michael L. Szydlowski passed away peacefully at his Williamsburg, Virginia home following a recent battle with cancer. A lifelong Virginia resident, “Mr. Ski” was born February 24, 1952 in Lynchburg, to Earl and Lyvonne Szydlowski. He graduated from the University of Virginia before beginning a multifarious career at Woodberry Forest School which spanned thirty-eight years and buoyed the lives of an untold number of students, school staff and his fellow faculty members. A dedicated husband, brother, father and educator, those who met him left with a sense of his depth of character, knowledge of the world, infinite charity and sheer work ethic. What would have been more than enough in a working week for most people was barely a start for Mike, functioning as a teacher, coach, student advisor, financial aid administrator and golf course superintendent during his tenure at Woodberry often fulfilling several of these roles simultaneously in addition to his secondary capacity as a tax preparer for his community.
All the while Mike retained his good cheer, a smile for anyone who needed it and during the summer months an unmatched love for baseball, movies, the beaches of North Carolina and the game of golf.
Mike is survived by his wife of forty-nine years Kim Szydlowski, sons; Beaton & Kane Szydlowski, daughter-in-law, Chelsea Szydlowski and grandson, Turner Smith Szydlowski.
