Michael “Mike” Allen Hunt, 62, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 21, 2018, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by family and friends, after a long battle with cancer.
Mike, born on March 12, 1955, in Hampton, VA to Carroll and Catherine (Roach) Hunt, grew up in Phoebus. He attended St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic School, and Kecoughtan High along with his three sisters and three brothers. All of the Hunt siblings shared a very close bond and cherished the closeness that came from the early loss of their parents.
Mike was a strong-willed, hard working, avid hunter and outdoorsman who loved his family. He began a career in the Local 45 Boilermaker Union in Richmond, VA where he formed a brotherhood of lifelong relationships with many. He married his beloved wife of 35 years, Linda (Chissler) Hunt on his birthday in 1983, adopted Linda’s son William Thomas and together, they had one daughter, Mary Catherine of whom he was so proud and loved so much.
Mike was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his children, brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews out in the country, teaching them how to appreciate wildlife and God’s creation through being outside hunting, growing vegetable gardens, breeding and raising award winning hunting beagles, fishing and riding on his tractor. Mike retired after 34 years of service, and loved spending time at home on the water, in his garage relaxing, cooking for his wife and daughter, and having family come over. His most cherished moments were spent with his grandson Jacob, taking him to ride go karts, to amusements parks, on trips to Orlando, making bets and playing pool, watching him play baseball and win at the bowling alley.
Mike is survived by his wife Linda; daughter Mary Catherine; grandson Jacob; brother Carroll Hunt and his wife Shirley of Hampton, VA; brother Robert (Bob) Hunt and wife Peggy of Huntsville, AL; sister Linda Marie and her husband Michael Holland of Richmond, VA; brother James (Jimmy) Hunt of Hampton; sister-in-law Julie Hunt of Knoxville TN; Cecilia and her husband Jarrett Huffman of Brandon, FL; sister Theresa and her husband Richard Gruver of Austin, TX; as well as his many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, adopted son William, and brother-in-law Allan.
Mike will be remembered as a strong hero who fought hard to stay alive for his family and for those that loved him. Those who hunted with him will remember his ability to shoot well and put game on the ground. To honor and celebrate Mike’s life, a memorial service will be held on Friday, February 16, 2018, at 7 PM at Lighthouse Church, 4299 George Washington Memorial Hwy, Hayes, VA 23072. A special thank you to the Heartland Hospice team for their loving care and support. Also to his big brother Carroll and his loving wife Shirley of Hampton, who both faithfully supported him throughout his cancer treatments. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Lighthouse Church.
Hunters Prayer
“I pray that I may live to hunt
until my dying day.
And when it comes
to my last quest,
I then most humbly pray,
when in the Lord’s
encompassing aim
and peacefully asleep,
that in his mercy I be judged
worthy enough to keep.”
