Michael Richard Rothermel, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 72. Born on November 22, 1952, in St. Joseph, Michigan, Michael lived a life filled with adventure, dedication, and love.
Michael proudly served as a helicopter pilot for eight years, participating in numerous rescue missions that showcased his bravery and commitment to helping others. His career also included work with Saberliner and Premium Turbines, where he applied his skills and passion for aviation. He was a proud alumnus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a member of both the Missouri Masons and the Air Force.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Michael cherished his personal hobbies. An avid fisherman, he found peace and joy by the water. He enjoyed collecting coins, a pastime that connected him to history and culture. Michael also had a love for music and spent many hours playing the guitar, sharing his melodies with friends and family.
Michael was preceded in death by his loving parents, Vivian and Donald Rothermel. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories through his children, Allison Koehn, Theresa Lewis, and Joseph Rothermel. He also leaves behind his treasured grandchildren, Aubrey and Eryn Koehn, and Aiden Lewis, along with sons-in-law Nathan Koehn and Matthew Lewis. He leaves behind a loving Aunt Helen Decker, Uncle Richard Rothermel. He is also survived by his cousin who was considered more of a brother Tim Davis that will carry the stories of their childhood and a dear friend that will carry his memory Cindi Lauver.
Michael’s life was a testament to his unwavering spirit and kind heart. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him but will forever remain in their hearts.
