Lorna Gail Lownik, born on July 30, 1940, in Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 84. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her.
Lorna’s life was a tapestry woven with love, adventure, and community. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Columbia College in Missouri, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning and exploration. It was in Missouri that she met the love of her life, Edward Lownik. Their marriage spanned 61 remarkable years, filled with shared dreams and countless memories, until Edward’s passing last year.
Together, Lorna and Edward embarked on a journey that took them around the world. From the bustling streets of Japan to the scenic landscapes of Holland, and across the United States in California, Nevada, New Mexico, and finally, settling in Virginia in 1986. Everywhere they went, Lorna made friends and built communities, leaving a lasting impact.
A devoted member of St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Yorktown, VA, Lorna found joy and purpose in her faith and fellowship. She was known to meet up with friends for coffee and exercise gatherings, where her laughter and spirit were infectious. Her love for games was evident in her passion for playing Bridge and Mahjong, where she cherished the camaraderie and competition.
Lorna is preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Exie Wright, her sister Mary, and her beloved husband, Edward. She leaves behind a legacy of love and family, survived by her sister Nancy, her children, Mark Lownik and his wife Jennifer, and Carol Kassel and her husband Karl. Her four cherished grandchildren, Ava, Garrett, Stephen, and Sidney, were the light of her life, bringing her immense pride and joy.
Though Lorna has left this world, her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was a testament to the power of love, friendship, and resilience. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. Arrangements are in the care of Cremation Society of Virginia – Peninsula.
