In Loving Memory of Nancy Davis Redd
June 16, 1948 – May 8, 2025
Nancy Davis Redd, a devoted educator, loving mother, grandmother, sister, partner, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Hampton, Virginia, on May 8, 2025, surrounded by those who loved her dearly. She was 76 years old.
Born on June 16, 1948, in Salisbury, North Carolina, Nancy was the cherished daughter of the late Annie Veen Morton Davis and Ernest Sidney Davis. She graduated from Price High School and went on to attend Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), where she earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees. Education was not only her profession but her calling. Nancy served as a teacher in the Newport News Public School System for over 30 years, inspiring countless students with her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment. Even after her retirement, her passion for teaching continued as she worked as an instructor at Hampton University, taught in the Newport News Jail System, and occasionally returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher.
Nancy’s dedication extended beyond the classroom. A faithful member of Carver Memorial Presbyterian Church in Newport News, she lived a life guided by love, service, and faith. She was also a passionate advocate for civic engagement, actively volunteering in local and national political campaigns, especially during election years.
Nancy embraced life with joy and generosity. She loved to travel, with a particular fondness for cruises. She was the heart of every family gathering, especially known for her legendary Memorial Day cookouts, where her backyard overflowed with laughter, love, and delicious food.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ivan Redd; her parents; and her brothers-in-law, Ralph Dillard and Leroy Worley.
Nancy’s memory lives on through those who survive her: her devoted children, Dr. Thomas Redd (Dr. Ginger Redd), Shaun Redd (Shellie Redd), Lauren Redd Ertekin, and Shannon Redd, Esq.; her grandchildren, Eva Redd, Lea Redd, Luke Redd, Leila Ertekin, Alton Ertekin, Hailey Redd, and Christian Redd; her cherished partner, Joseph Press; her beloved siblings, Carole Dillard, Ernestine Worley, Cynthia McDonald (Kenneth McDonald), and Rev. Dr. Sidney Davis, Sr. (Marilyn Davis); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
Nancy’s legacy of love, learning, and community spirit will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
