Pauline (May) Potts Kenney joined this world on the first day of spring: March 20, 1936. Her parents, Paul Potts and Mary (Potts) Hayman were blessed to bring home a resilient, positive beacon to this world.
She graduated from Maury High School, and was working for VEPCO when she met the love of her life, David Michael Kenney at a friend’s birthday party. He had just gotten out of the Navy and it was clear where his next life achievement would be focused; he told her he wanted to marry her on that day. They were married two months later and enjoyed 57 years together filled with love and laughter. They had two children, Paige Henry (55) of Richmond, VA and David J. Kenney (50) of Chesapeake, Va. She also enjoyed being a huge part of her grandchildren’s lives, Kaleigh Kenney (28), Elliott Tarchokov (20) and Garrett Tarchokov (17).
In her 60’s she decided she needed to have something to do to be around more people and was part of the opening team of Lowe’s on Battlefield Blvd. She became the plumbing expert, and loved how many men were re-directed to her because they thought she wouldn’t know the answers since she was a woman. She retired after 14 years. #LowesKnows #PollyKnows
She was blessed with four loving sisters who were by her side her entire life and through her final months: Muriel Hayman, Patsey Strange, Sally Legg and the late Becky Davis.
She once said all she wanted to be in life was a good mom, to keep her children safe and happy would be the pinnacle of achievements, and boy did she over-deliver. She taught us not to sweat the small stuff, to love deeply (and remind everyone every day that we loved them), to be kind to everyone and resilient in the face of adversity.
She fought a good fight, always beating the odds in this world and will be greatly missed in this human form, but will be with us all in spirit watching over until the end of days. She blessed us with 3 spring days, transitioning to be with the Lord on the last, November 21st, 2023 at 87 years old, in her home surrounded by her loving family.
A celebration of her life will be held on December 17, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. at 1775 Historic Way, Chesapeake, VA 23320. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pauline’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/donate/memorial-giving.html. Thank you for loving our Polly.
