On Sunday, December 29, 2019, Peggy Appleton Surry, 87, loving wife and devoted mother of four children, passed away at home surrounded by family.

Peggy was born on September 30, 1932 in Newport News, Virginia to Nicholas and Christine Appleton. She graduated from Warwick High School and was married to the love of her life, Robert “Mac” Surry.

Peggy worked for Newport News Shipbuilding and retired from Newport News Public Schools after 24 years of service. Peggy always lived within her means and instilled strong values in her children that have served them well throughout their lives. She excelled in growing backyard vegetables and loved flowers. She and Mac shared their love of nature with their children by taking them camping in the mountains of Virginia. Later they purchased a camper which allowed them to travel extensively throughout the East Coast. In 1969, they purchased property on Lake Gaston in North Carolina where they eventually moved after retirement. Peggy enjoyed volunteering with the Roanoke Wildwood Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, participating in the Ladies Club Garden Club and Green Thumbs. She and Mac joined Pleasant Hill Christian Church in 2004.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Robert M. Surry, of 69 years, and children, James R. “Bobby” Surry of Newport News, Pamela S. Wilson (Charles) of Farmville, VA, LTC (Ret) Paul H. Surry (Lori) of Valentines, VA, and Christine S. Youngblood (Allen) of Newport News. Peggy especially enjoyed her role as Nana to her six grandchildren, Timothy Youngblood (Ashley), Courtney Youngblood Jones (Brent), Robert Wilson, Madison Surry, Marlee Surry, Gaston Surry and her five great grandchildren, Landon, Mason and Hailey Youngblood and Camden and Kinleigh Jones. Peggy is also survived by her brother, James S. Appleton and many loving nieces and nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Christine Appleton and sister, Jacqueline Martin.

The family would like to thank her awesome caregivers Hazel Roland, Onneica Blakeney, Geneva Powell, Chanel Williams #1, Chanel Williams #2, and LaShanda Walker, who all became members of our family.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 2 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 235 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA. 23601.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Hill Christian Church, P.O. Box 550, Gasburg, VA 23857 or the American Cancer Society. Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

To the entire Surry family, Lana and I, plus our children, Mark and Kelly, want to express our sorrow and sadness over Peggy's passing. We have been honored by knowing and living a couple of doors away from Peggy and Mac and family for many years. She was always so friendly and pleasant and always smiling; just a real pleasure being around her, Mac, and family. We will truly miss seeing her at the lake and enjoying our little chats and visits during the spring, summer, and fall. We are happy and proud to have been her neighbor and close acquaintance. We will keep the entire Surry family in our thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of the entire Lotz clan from Lake Gaston, we want to express our deepest sympathy to the entire Surry family in your loss of your precious Mom Peggy. She was always so friendly and caring. We are so sorry for the loss of such a wonderful loving wife, mother and friend. To Mac and the entire family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Peggy will always be watching over her family and friends from heaven.

Life is a crazy thing, you always want to believe that people we love will be here on earth forever. It is especially true of those that place an impression in your heart. Peggy was one of those that could make you smile just by seeing the smile on her face. Even though there are many heavy hearts in disbelief that she is no longer here for us to see, she still smiles and holds our hands from heaven.

Peggy's gentle nature and warm smile will certainly be missed by her friends and neighbors at Lake Gaston. She never had an unkind word for anyone and we will miss her at the Auxiliary meetings but know she is smiling among the angels

Life goes by so quickly and it seems we miss so, so much. Then there are the most obvious blessings placed before us, we simply cannot deny! This lovely lady is one of those obvious blessings, and although she will be sorely missed by so many loving, caring hearts, it is just a great testimony of how deeply she touched so many with her remarkable life. Mac, Chris, Courtney and all of the family, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to each of you. You are a remarkable family. Peggy was indeed, the epitome of a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother/great-grandmother and what a beautiful legacy she leaves for each of you to cherish. She was blessed to have you all in her life, and every one of you were blessed to have her in your lives. She is now in the presence of our Lord and Savior. No more sickness, no more pain. For that, we have to unselfishly shout, "Hallelujah, Praise God, she's Home!" Hold your memories close to your hearts, it will give you such comfort in the days ahead. Always keep her memory alive for the little ones. May God give each of you His divine, everlasting peace, healing and comfort, and carry you through this difficult time. I would have you all know how sorry that I am that Cousin Peggy has left you. Meanwhile I am so very glad to realize that she has joined her Saviour and I am quite certain that Ma-ma is quite glad to be reunited with her baby girl again. Prayers of strength and comfort for all of her family. Whenever Paul and Lori entertained our combined families,Peggy was so sweet ,nice and soft spoken.She was always appreciative and complimentary. The obit described exactly what I imagined without knowing.What a tribute to her life and lasting memories she will foster in all of yours.
