Phyllis S Jones, 88, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2011 in Virginia Beach, VA. She was born December 15, 1922 in Cranston, Rhode Island, the daughter of Milton W. and Ruth Nelson Sahlgren. She was a honor graduate of Cranston High school and attended Penn State University during World War II as an engineering student sponsored by the Hamilton Standard Propeller Company. Following her marriage to her husband of 63 years, James H. Jones, she lived in Glenside, Pa and moved to Virginia Beach in July 1955.
She obtained bachelors and masters degrees from Old Dominion University and taught for many years at First Colonial High School. Phyllis truly loved teaching U S government and took great interest in politics. She and her family enjoyed many spirited discussions on politics and current events from all sides of the political spectrum. Following her retirement from teaching, she and her beloved Jimmy, enjoyed traveling all over the world including several trips with her children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sister Connie Schmidt. Phyllis is survived by her husband James Jones, her children Randy Wendy of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Connie Jones, of Virginia Beach, Beth Ann Jones Steve, of Lyme, CT and Jamie Wendy of Virginia Beach, 8 grandchildren, Michelle, Kimberly, Molly, Liam, Aggie, Silja, Kelly, Leigh and one great-grandson Rivers, her brothers Milton and Myles Sahlgren.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Monday April 4, 2011 in the Magnolia room at Atlantic Shores, Dr. Gene Wooldridge, officiating. The family wishes to express their thanks to the wonderful and loving staff of Seaside Health Center for their kind and considerate care of Phyllis these last 4 years. In lieu, of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
