Continue ReadingRaiford Linwood Whitfield, Jr. “R. L.”, 82, passed away on September 27, 2014. Born in Newport News, VA, he was the son of the late Raiford Linwood “Whit” Whitfield, Sr. and Carley Norfleet Whitfield. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Anne Carley Whitfield.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia Davis Whitfield, daughter Lynne, of Norfolk, VA and son, James, his wife Mia, and granddaughter Valerie of Mountain View, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Whitfield Ransone, her husband Thomas of Norfolk, VA and numerous nieces and nephews.
R. L. was a graduate of Maury High School and the College of William and Mary. He was the owner of R. L. Whitfield Co. Inc., and a U. S. Army veteran. He was member of Burrows Memorial Baptist Church serving as a Deacon for 50 years and Treasurer for 47 years. He was a past Worshipful Master of Atlantic Lodge, #2, AF&AM and past Worthy Patron of Virginia Chapter #22, O.E.S. After retiring, he was an avid golfer with the Tidewater Seniors Invitational Golf Association.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 at Burrows Memorial Baptist Church, 1539 Johnston’s Road, Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Burrows Memorial Baptist Church.
