Raleigh Walter Manley, Jr., 74, affectionately called Junie, transitioned to his heavenly home early Saturday morning, October 28, 2023. Junie grew up in South Norfolk and attended Chesapeake Public Schools. He was drafted and served in the Army during the Vietnam War receiving the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal.
In the 70s Raleigh married Sondra Peoples. Later he married Vera Dainton and they remained married until her passing September 23, 2023. He and his wife were faithful members of the Wave Church in Virginia Beach until his health failed. Raleigh was a dutiful husband. He loved gardening and pets. Chickens, dogs, and cats were just a few of the pets cared for by him. He also enjoyed fixing bicycles and electronics. Raleigh was smooth, with a voice that would cause anyone to take notice and a smile that would melt your heart.
Junie is predeceased by his parents, Raleigh Sr. and Clentora Manley; his wife Vera D. Manley; his siblings; Luther Askew, Melvin Manley, Catherine Manley, Tyrone Manley, and Terry Manley. He leaves to mourn his daughter Tora V. Goodwyn (Michael Sr.); two grandchildren Olivia and Michael Jr.; his siblings Joyce Bryant (Herbert), Carolyn Carrington, Kareem Azeez, Willie Goins, Alfonza Manley, Jerry Manley (Brenda), and Maurice Manley (Karen); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Raleigh’s memory will be cherished. He will be missed; he is forever loved.
Inurnment will be held Wednesday, November 22, 2023, at 10 a.m. at The Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia. Family will gather at 343 Knell’s Ridge Drive Chesapeake, VA 23320 following the service for lunch.
