I met Pat in 1984 at the Koger Executive Center when I was to work the CPA firm’s front desk for four months during tax season. Due to mentors and kind folks like Pat, I lasted four years. Pat took me under his wing, and I soon met Grace, who recruited me to volunteer for the Symphony Pops concerts. Pat and Grace loved to entertain in their gracious home on Finn Road. Grace was sharp, with a dry wit I had never seen in a woman. She was also a fantastic cook, introducing this Midwestern black Angus farmer’s daughter to crab dip and sweet potato biscuits with Smithfield ham. While Grace served as hostess, Pat poured the drinks and told tales. At one of their gatherings I met Bev Sell, who later introduced me to the man I married in 1991, with Pat and Grace in attendance. We stayed in close touch through the years, with Pat saying I was the daughter he never had. We were there for Pat and Emma’s wedding in the Westminster-Canterbury Chapel in 2004, and ten years later I was honored to be asked to give the speech at their anniversary luncheon. Pat touched many lives, professionally, through his civic engagements and volunteer work, and socially. He was a master at spinning a yarn and could tell a story about almost anyone who was worth knowing in Virginia Beach. Rest in peace, Pat, we miss you.
