Continue ReadingWith greatest sorrow we announce the passing of Richard D. Sykes, 69, on May 8, 2024. Richard was born in Nash County, North Carolina on August 27, 1954 to the late Charles Braxton Sykes and Emily Grace Baker. He was a carpenter by trade and did a lot of work for the Town of Smithfield, Virginia. Richard enjoyed cooking, being outdoors, gardening, watching television and building things. During the holidays he was Santa for the Town of Smithfield.
He is survived by his brothers, James Sykes (Clara), Durwood Sykes (Becky), Charles Sykes, Robert Sykes and David Baker; sister, Betty Pingley (Don); daughter, Brandy Battle (Donald); and granddaughter, Taylor Rose.
A celebration of life will be held at 12 noon on June 1st at Southside Baptist Church located at 4948 Carter Rd, Elm City, NC 27822.
