Richard E. Buttner, 87, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2016. He was born on October 16, 1928 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Dick graduated from Plymouth High School and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served as Instructor at the Command School in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He was also employed for 40 years by the General Electric Company in accounting and financial planning capacities. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, George and Esther Buttner; wife, Eleanor; sister, Nancy; and brother, Steve. He and Eleanor have 3 children – Susan Edwards (Knoxville, Tennessee), Richard, Jr. (Miami, Florida), and Douglas (Carrollton, Virginia). Dick also has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, of Ft. Monroe, Virginia, and three step-children; Jessica Jaffe (Pelham, New York); Monica Waesch (Frankfurt, Germany); and Matthew Houston (New York, New York). Dick was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hampton, and many civic organizations. He served in leadership roles and past treasurer for three churches prior to relocating to Ft. Monroe. He enjoyed his retirement years and was currently a resident at The Chamberlin. Dick’s hobbies included traveling, boating, golf, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends. In Dick’s memory, contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church, the Cancer Society , and Habitat for Humanity, or Bowdoin College. A Memorial Service will be held at the Hampton First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 2 p.m.
