Norfolk- Robert Edward Ingram, 59, passed away on September 15, 2017 surrounded by loving friends and family. Robert resided in Norfolk for most of his lifetime and enjoyed tinkering with antique cars, transforming any green space to a beautiful garden, and fully enjoying the company of his good friends while sipping iced tea at MJ’s and other various spots. Robert retired from the City of Norfolk after 25 years where he was a landscaper.

Robert touched the lives of many people with his kindness and generosity, and special brand of humor. He was predeceased by his mother Odessa Ingram. Robert will forever be remembered by his loving partner in life, Michael Johnson, cousin Jan White, her husband Mark White and daughters Delaney and Madison, his neighbors, and countless friends who were blessed to know him. Friends and family will celebrate Robert’s life at a later date.

Robert was a wonderful man. I am saddened to learn that this gentle giant will no longer laugh and talk with me as I grow older. I know he is missed by many but most by Mike who was always at his side. My sympathies to Mike and all of Roberts family and friends.

Mike, I am so very sorry for you, dear friend. Robert had such a delightful smile, he radiated warmth. He and Miss Kitty Girl are keeping each other company on their new journey. Much love and many hugs for you. Just reach out, they are always right beside you, dear friend.

City Bear as I knew him was always kind and caring. The Bear part of his nickname was as a big gentle soft teddy bear and was always guick with a wave and a smile. He will be greatly missed as a fixture on A View. Rest in piece City Bear!

Even though I've not had the privilege of knowing Robert as long as many of his friends, I still knew him as a kind person who always had a smile. I can only wish I'd known him longer. My deepest condolences to Michael and the rest of the family. God bless you all!

Robert, you were always very kind and welcoming to me when we hung out in Roanoke. I am deeply saddened by your passing. You touched so many lives in a positive way. Robert was one of the kindest people I know. Always a smile on his face which was infectious and always made me smile back. He always cheered me up whenever I would see him. He will be deeply missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Mike and Robert's family.

Mike my heart breaks for you. I know how much you and Robert loved one another. The blessing is that you were soul mates who lived life to the fullest. Many couples live together decades and never experience what you both shared. Robert will still be watching over you and us and I can just see that quite smile as he wonders what we'll be up to. My experience is that the love that we share continues to wash back over us as we move forward in our journey. Seeing Robert’s obituary makes me realize that this is all real. He is one of the first people I ever came out to, when I met him at Phoenix Rising book store. I was very unsure of myself, and he knew how to make me feel comfortable in myself. We had an instant bond, as we both had cars in common. Then, we lost touch for many years. Later, we would reunite: me, my husband, Robert and his husband. We spent many fun evenings together, eating, drinking, and laughing. Those are the memories I hold dear and cherish. When it’s my time to cross the bridge, I hope Robert is one of the first people I encounter, as I am sure he will make me feel welcomed once more. My prayers and condolences for Mike, as well as his and Robert’s family.

The friendship of Robert, and Mike, will forever occupy a special place in my heart.
