Robert E. Spires – Norfolk
Norfolk native Robert Bob Elwood Spires was born in 1928 and died at the age of 84 after a long illness. He was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Sadie Spires and his devoted wife of 54 years, Jeanne Virginia Cox. After graduating from South Norfolk High School in 1947, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps before embarking on a lifelong career with his own direct mail marketing firm. Bob served at Freemason Baptist Church as assistant to the Youth Pastor and Deacon. He later served at First Baptist Church of Norfolk as Usher, Deacon and was active in the Young at Heart Group. He was also a long term active member of the Ocean View Lions Club. Bob loved spending time with his family, friends and traveling with the Young at Heart Group. Left to cherish his memories are his daughters Deborah Lynn Massey and her husband Malcolm, Julie Anne Cobb and her husband John, and Holly Leigh Spires. He could not have been prouder of his 6 grandsons Nathan Samuel and Timothy Andrew Harrison, John Taylor and Michael Warren Cobb, Brent Edward and Eric Taylor Massey or his great grandchildren Noah Warren and Bayleigh Nicole Cobb. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, August 28th 2pm until 6pm in Norfolk at the home of Julie and John Cobb, 2418 Stribling Lane. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
