Rick and Patty Jenkins left a message on August 22, 2011:
To the family of Mr. Spires, I was 18 years old when I moved to Virginia Beach from West Virginia. I was introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Spires in 1983 when they took a chance on me and offered me a job at Spires Mailing Service. I held that job until December 1984 when I left to go work for The Virginian-Pilot. I’m thankful for having the opportunity to have built my future on the early beginnings working for the Spires. Rick Jenkins was a student at Bayside High when Mr. Spires offer him a summer job as part of work program. Rick and I married in 1986. The Spires celebrated our wedding with us. I last saw Mr. Spires while he was working for Commonwealth Printing Co. I was walking through the halls at The Pilot and was surprised to see him there. We hugged. I believe he retired shortly after. Mr. Spires was a wonderful person, as was his wife. Our deepest sympathies,
