It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Wayne Mills, who departed this life on April 11, 2025, in Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 76. Born on September 7, 1948, in New York, Robert lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love for his family.
Robert began his educational journey at Farmingdale State College and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Buffalo. Robert proudly served his country as a Senior First Class (SFC) in the Army National Guard, where he was recognized for his outstanding performance and received a Certificate of Achievement. He was also a valued member of the 29th Division Artillery. Alongside his military service, Robert dedicated 42 years to Newport News Shipbuilding as an engineer, contributing significantly to the industry with his expertise and commitment.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Robert had a passion for life that extended beyond work. He was a devoted member of The Harley Owner Group, where he cherished the camaraderie and freedom of the open road. His love for his Harley Davidson was matched only by his enthusiasm for golf and the treasured moments spent with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his loving wife, JoAnn Mills; his parents, Louise and Wayne Mills; his brother, Gary Mills; and his sister, Linda O’Conner. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his surviving family: his daughter, Heather Grimes, and her husband, Jason Grimes; his son, Michael Mills Sr., and his wife, Christina Mills. He was the proud grandfather of Samantha Grimes, Michael Mills Jr., Robert Mills II, Shawn Mills, Brett Rand, and Casey Rand.
Robert’s life was a testament to loyalty, hard work, and the joy of family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before him.
