Roberto Vargas, age 91, passed away on September 2, 2020. Roberto was born in Puerto Rico. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Carmen Rivera and Father, Eladio Vargas. Also preceding him in death are his brothers, Nelson and Sammy Vargas and his sisters, Juanita Maldonado and Irma Leandres.
He leaves behind his devoted wife of 66 years, Lucia Vargas as well as his daughters Jeanette Vargas, Marie Vargas and Eilene Ferland and son-in law Vincent Ferland, granddaughter Marissa Ferland and great-grand daughter, Angelica Ferland. Also surviving him is his sister, Iris San Inocencio and husband Jose of Hampton VA as well as beloved nephews and nieces.
Roberto was a good provider for his family. He worked many years for the MTA in New York City, winning awards for his safe driving. After retiring, Robert & Lucy left NY and moved to Allentown, PA. Years later they would move to Newport News, VA. Both in PA and VA, Roberto enjoyed entertaining friends and family as well as tending to his home and garden. He had a green thumb and could make just about anything grow. He also enjoyed music and dance, playing paddleball, card games and dominoes, and beating his son-in law at pool. He also loved to fish.
As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Roberto was involved with another kind of “fishing”, the kind Jesus spoke of when he told his followers that he would make them “fishers of men” (Matt 4:19). Roberto entertained the Bible hope of living forever in a Paradise earth, free of sickness, pain and death.
The family would like to thank the excellent care Roberto received from his Physician of many years Doc Kenneth Putland and from everyone with Riverside Hospice, especially his caring nurse Melissa C. We also wish to thank others who assisted with his care in the past, Barbara Smith-Owen and in more recent years, the excellent care given him by Crystal Lee.
A memorial service for Roberto will be held via Zoom on Sat 9/12/2020 @ 1:00 pm.
