Roland “Rolly” Doan, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2023, surrounded by family, at Atlantic Shores Retirement community. Born in Berwick, PA, he graduated from Lafayette College in 1950. Soon after, he met his wife of 54 years, Georgiana Dahlman Doan, in Buffalo, NY, where they raised Roland “Lanny” Doan III, Susan Prevoznak, and Sarah Borshoff. Rolly eventually became the Town Engineer of Amherst, NY, serving for 26 years.
In 1995, Rolly and Georgie moved to Virginia Beach and became active members of the Chesopeian Colony community. Rolly was a member of the Princess Anne Rotary Club and Bayside Presbyterian Church. In 2008, they relocated to Atlantic Shores. His beloved Georgie passed soon after in 2009.
He later met Mary Martin, also a resident of Atlantic Shores. The two were partners for ten years. Mary pre-deceased Rolly in 2021. He considered himself fortunate to have many wonderful and loving friends. Rolly had excellent caregivers who provided not only dedicated care but also companionship. The family would like to thank all for the support received, especially his friends, caregivers, Sentara’s Home Care and Sentara’s Hospice group.
Rolly was a loved and loving parent and grandparent. He is survived by his children’s families: Lanny, his wife Diana Scofield, and their children Caleb Doan (Alejandra Breve Ferrari) and Conor (Kathryn) Doan; Susan, her husband Steve Prevoznak, and their children Kippy Prevoznak and Ben (Jocelyn) Prevoznak; and Sarah, her husband Terry Borshoff, and their children Cassie and Jenny Borshoff.
Rolly is also survived by his siblings, Foster Doan and Mary Lee, along with numerous nieces including, locally, Nancy (Richard) Guy and Margaret Ann (Ron) Martin, and nephews.
Burial will be at Rosewood Memorial Park with arrangements provided by the Cremation Society by of Virginia. Donations may be made to the Employee’s Gift Fund of Atlantic Shores by clicking here.
